Purity Ring – Shrines

Electronic duo Megan James (vocals) and Corin Roddick (production) met whilst members of another band, Born Gold. Whilst on tour, Corin began experimenting with electronic production. Megan was asked to sing on the track Ungirthed, thus Purity Ring was born.

The duo from Edmonton, Alberta have recently released their debut album Shrines. I’ve played this album a lot recently, but I must admit it took me a few listens to get into it. Not that it’s hard to listen to, but more so because I didn’t really know what to expect.

The dubbed-out electronics add depth and moodiness to the songs with noticeable leanings towards electronica, garage and dubstep. Not to be outdone, Megan’s intelligent lyrics and soft, gentle tones with pop sensibilities are a match made in heaven.

Shrines is out now on 4AD.
